Overview
Sadolin Beautiflex is suitable for application on both new and previously painted or stained surfaces, including decking. It is particularly beneficial where a complete colour change is desired or when the existing surface has weathered and appears uneven. This product is resistant to fading, weathering, and UV rays. Its microporous formulation effectively prevents cracking and peeling.
Please note: This product is not recommended for use over oil finishes.
Sadolin suggests that this product can provide protection for up to 7 years, although this duration may vary depending on the surface. Please note that this exclusion applies to decking.
If you're in need of a water-based exterior opaque wood stain, consider Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection.
Preparation
Ensure timber surfaces are adequately prepared, clean, and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% before application.
For bare or new timber
- Remove any resinous deposits using a scraper.
- Degrease exposed bare timber surfaces by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits.
- Sand back any grey, denatured timber surfaces to reveal clean, bright timber.
- Eliminate organic growths and treat infected areas with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner.
- Clean remaining sound surfaces with warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
- Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin opaque systems.
- Use fillers specifically designed for timber, such as Sadolin Wood Filler and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler, for minor surface defects, imperfections, and open joints.
- Utilise non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
- Treat non-preservative-treated softwood timber with two liberal coats of Sadolin Wood Preserver, focusing on end grains, and allow 24 hours drying time between coats before applying Sadolin Beautiflex.
- Ideally, apply the base coat all around before fixing.
- Do not use Sadolin Beautiflex on substrates treated with water-repellent preservatives.
For previously coated timber
- Lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain without penetrating the surface coating.
- For localised damage or deterioration from prolonged exposure, thoroughly sand affected areas back to a sound substrate before recoating.
- Remove any sanding dust.
For decking
- Follow the instructions for New Timber or Existing Coatings preparation.
- For optimal results, coat decking boards on all sides with Beautiflex Solvent Opaque Woodstain.
For glazing
- Prior to fixing, finish the backs of new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates with Sadolin Beautiflex.
- Glaze joinery intended for Sadolin opaque systems using a suitable sealant.
- Avoid using linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds in conjunction with Sadolin systems.
- Consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material to confirm compatibility.
- Silicone glazing materials should only be applied after completing the finishing coats.
Application
Before starting any project, conduct a small test area to assess consistency and ensure compatibility of the final finish. Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Avoid application if there's a risk of rain or when air or substrate temperatures fall below 5°C or rise above 25°C. Additionally, avoid application during periods of high relative humidity exceeding 80%. Protect from frost and rain until fully dry, as failure to meet these conditions may impact drying, visual quality, and durability.
Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to prevent sheen and colour variations. Sadolin Beautiflex comes ready for use and should not be thinned.
Apply in a full, flowing coat, ensuring complete coverage of all surfaces and end grains. For optimal results, use a high-quality, long-haired synthetic brush. Pay close attention to end grains, door tops and bottoms, and still undersides.
Ideally, apply the base coat all around before fixing.
Finish with a minimum of two full coats of Sadolin Beautiflex, allowing 16-24 hours drying time between coats. In some cases, particularly on certain substrates or when transitioning from dark to pale shades, an additional coat may be necessary to achieve full coverage.
Cleaning equipment
Immediately clean brushes and equipment with a proprietary brush cleaner after use. In case of spills, promptly remove while still wet using a proprietary cleaner.
Aftercare
Maintenance
Monitor the need for maintenance by observing a lightening in colour, a decrease in sheen as the coating wears away, and a decline in water repellent qualities.
Remove all defective coatings entirely.
Thoroughly sand back any grey, denatured timber surfaces to reveal clean, bright timber.
Eliminate organic growths and treat infected surfaces with a suitable fungicidal solution.
Clean remaining sound surfaces using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
Patch prime bare timber with an additional coat of Sadolin Beautiflex.
Apply 1 or 2 coats of Sadolin Beautiflex as needed to finish.
