What is external timber cladding?

External cladding is a layer of material installed on the wall or roof of a property. Outdoor cladding is primarily used for two reasons: firstly, to improve the aesthetic appeal of the building, and secondly, to provide further weather resistance and heat insulation, which can extend the lifespan of the building’s materials.

What are the advantages of exterior timber cladding?

External timber cladding offers a number of advantages, such as:

  • Long-lasting: Exterior cladding made from timber can last for decades when treated appropriately. This offers fantastic value more money for your home.
  • Eco-friendly: Timber is a renewable material, and many brands ensure that trees are now replaced once they have been cut down, making it a more eco-friendly option.
  • Great looks: There are few things that look as good as natural timber. Exterior wall cladding is eye-catching and fits easily into almost any environment to refresh the aesthetics.

How to install external timber cladding

Installing timber exterior wall cladding will vary depending on the primary wall structure:

  • Timber frame wall: The battens should be attached to the walls studs. Fix the cladding to the battens and ensure a membrane is place.
  • External wall: External wall cladding on an external wall needs the battens to be attached to the wall before adding the cladding to the battens.
  • Cavity wall: Exterior wall cladding on a cavity wall requires the battens to be attached with a plug and screw. The cladding can then be attached to the battens.
