    Overview

Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain is a microporous, water-based, translucent coating that offers year-round protection against the elements. It can be applied to both dry and wet decking surfaces, including those that have been recently washed or exposed to light showers, provided standing water has been removed. This decking stain is ready to use immediately without the need for dilution or mixing.

Please note: The final sheen of translucent coatings can vary depending on factors such as wood species, timber colour, and existing coatings.

    Preparation

Ensure the project area is free from dust, debris, and contaminants before treatment.

    • Wash surfaces with a mild detergent and rinse with clean water.
    • Remove all standing water and puddles.
    • Lightly sand or scrub with a non-metallic brush to eliminate loose particles if necessary.
    • Use a scraper to remove resin deposits.
    • Degrease surfaces with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits.
    • For excessively weathered decking, sand the wood to create a clean and sound surface.
    • Eliminate algae or organic growths with a suitable fungicidal wash.
    • Abrade sound timber in the direction of the grain with a medium or fine-grain pad (P180 or P240).
    • Apply wood fillers to repair minor defects and gaps.

    For new timber decking

    • Coat untreated wood or freshly sawn ends of decking boards with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, ensuring the timber is dry, and allow 24 hours for the preservative to dry.
    • Remove any salts remaining from the preservative treatment.

    For previously coated decking

    • Remove any previous coatings of paint or varnish and treat the decking as new timber following the preparation steps above.
    • For decking previously treated with creosote or water repellent products, ensure the timber is well weathered and no longer retains water repellent properties. Test by sprinkling water onto the decking and observing absorption.
    • Sand down grey and denatured timber to reveal bright, clean wood, and treat it as new timber.

    Please note

    • Do not apply Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain in inclement weather conditions such as rain or showers, or if temperatures are likely to fall below 8ºC or exceed 25ºC.
    • Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain is not suitable as a penetrating treatment process, and the use of linseed oil putty or modified non-setting compounds is not recommended.

    Application

Before applying Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain, conduct a test area to evaluate the product's suitability and the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for optimal results.

    • Thoroughly stir the Sadolin Wet Wood Decking Stain to ensure a consistent mixture of the formula.
    • For best results, use a high-quality synthetic fibre bristle brush.
    • On new decking, apply the initial coat to concealed areas whenever possible.
    • Apply 3 or more coats, depending on the absorbency of the decking timber, with a drying time of 6 hours between each coat.
    • After applying each coat, wait 5-10 minutes before redistributing the coating by brushing in the direction of the grain.
    • Avoid overspreading the coat, as this may result in inferior results.
    • Ensure that end grains and sawn timbers are coated to saturation point, as these areas are more porous and will absorb more decking stain.
    • To clean equipment after application, use warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
