    Overview

Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is designed for all types of wooden flooring, including hardwood, softwood boards, and parquet, excluding laminate flooring. Formulated with a blend of polyurethane and acrylic resin, it offers easy maintenance and excellent resistance to stains and spills. Touch dry within 1-2 hours, recoatable in 2-4 hours, and fully hardened after 24 hours.

For larger commercial wooden floors requiring a professional-grade, solvent-based two-pack varnish, consider Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish.

    Preparation

Timber surfaces must be adequately prepared, clean, stable, and dry. Ensure the moisture content does not exceed 16% before coating.

    For bare or new timber

    • Lightly sand along the grain using appropriate abrasive paper, being cautious not to damage the timber surface.
    • Remove sanding dust either with a vacuum cleaner or by wiping it away.
    • Eliminate any resinous deposits with a scraper.
    • Wipe the exposed bare timber surface with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits, changing the cloth face frequently.
    • Allow the solvent to fully evaporate before over-coating.
    • Remove organic growths and treat infected surfaces with a suitable fungicidal solution.
    • Abrade all existing finishes thoroughly to ensure good adhesion.
    • Clean remaining sound surfaces using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
    • Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin varnish systems.
    • Utilise Sadolin Wood Filler and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler for minor surface defects, imperfections, and open joints.
    • Only utilise non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.

    For previously coated timber:

    • Remove all defective coatings, then treat them as 'New Timber.'
    • Take particular care during the surface preparation of pre-1960s painted surfaces, as they may contain harmful lead.

For coating over a stained finish:

    • Solvent-borne coatings should dry for at least 3-5 days before applying Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish.
    • Waterborne wood stains can typically be over-coated within 24 hours, but advice from the relevant manufacturer should be sought.
    • Please Note: Some discoloration of the finish may occur if Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is applied over lighter shades of previous coatings.

    Application

Before starting, conduct a small test area to evaluate colour, consistency, and compatibility of the finish. Adhere strictly to the manufacturer's instructions provided on the tin.

Do not apply at temperatures below 8°C or above 25°C during application or drying periods. The floor temperature should be between 10°C and 25°C at the time of application. Ensure the relative humidity does not exceed 65%. Avoid direct sunlight on the floor during varnish application. Protect from water until fully dry to prevent adverse effects on drying, visual quality, and durability of the finish.

Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to prevent sheen and colour variations. Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish is ready for use and should not be thinned.

    • For optimal results, use a high-quality synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for waterborne products. Alternatively, a microfiber roller or paint pad can also be used.
    • Apply in full flowing coats, following the direction of the grain, ensuring complete coverage on all surfaces and end grains.
    • Finish with 3 full coats of Polyurethane Floor Varnish, allowing 2-4 hours drying time between coats.
    • Avoid excessive brushing to prevent brush marks and achieve a high-quality finish.
    • Carefully denib between coats using a fine-grade nylon abrasive pad or wet/dry silicon carbide abrasive paper (P240 or finer) in the direction of the grain. Be cautious not to break through the surface coating. Remove any sanding dust with a vacuum.
    • Apply subsequent coatings promptly after the previous coat has fully dried.
    • Minimise foot traffic for the first 24 hours after the final coat, and avoid placing rugs for 7 days to allow the varnish to thoroughly cure.

    Cleaning equipment

Clean brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water, and rinse with clean water immediately after use. In case of spills, promptly remove Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish while still wet, using clean water.
