Preparation
Before applying Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain, ensure that timber surfaces are thoroughly prepared, clean, and dry. Here's how to prepare different types of surfaces:
For bare timber
- Remove any resinous deposits using a scraper.
- Eliminate any traces of mould, algae, or fungi with a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner.
- Wipe exposed bare timber surfaces with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits to degrease them.
- Avoid using knotting agents before applying Sadolin Woodstain.
- Fill any holes or imperfections with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler.
- Use only non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
For new timber
- Treat any non-preservative-treated softwood timber with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver. Pay special attention to end grains and allow 24 hours drying time between coats.
- Avoid using Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain on substrates that have had water-repellent preservative treatments applied.
- Ideally, apply the first coat all around before fixing.
For previously stained timber
- Lightly abrade the surface in the direction of the wood grain.
- Avoid breaking through the surface coating and remove any sanding dust before coating.
- For localised damage or deterioration lasting longer than 3 months, thoroughly sand affected areas back to a sound substrate and recoat.
- If a coloured base stain is necessary to match the existing factory-applied coating, use Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain in the most appropriate colour before proceeding as described above.
For glazing
- Finish the backs of new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates with Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain before fixing.
- Use a suitable sealant to glaze joinery to be coated.
- Avoid using linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds in conjunction with Sadolin products.
- Consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material to confirm compatibility.
- Apply silicone glazing materials only upon completion of the finishing coats.
Application
Before starting your project, always conduct a small test area to ensure the colour and compatibility of the finish. Follow the instructions provided on the tin meticulously.
Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to achieve a consistent finish. Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain is ready for use and should not be thinned.
- Apply two full flowing coats of Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain using a high-quality synthetic fibre brush, ensuring complete coverage of all surfaces and end grains.
- For the first coat, apply liberally to accommodate the natural absorption of the timber surface.
- Pay close attention to end grain, door tops and bottoms, and undersides of sills.
- Allow six hours of drying time between coats.
Aftercare
Maintenance is required when you notice a lightening in colour, reduction in sheen, or loss of water-repellent qualities in the coating.
- Remove all defective coatings completely.
- Sand any grey or denatured exposed timber surfaces back to clean, bright timber.
- Treat any organic growths and infected surfaces with a suitable fungicidal solution.
- Clean remaining sound surfaces using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
- Patch prime bare timber with one or more coats of Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain in the appropriate colour to match the existing finish, as needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain be applied over creosote?
Unfortunately, Sadolin Quick Dry Woodstain cannot be applied over creosote as it will not form a bond. Consider using Protek Stable Coat for projects involving old creosote coatings.
