Our softwood treated sleepers are perfect for a variety of garden uses. Ideal for borders, retaining walls, planters and decking edging.

The treatment is safe for children and pets but not for eating or aquatic use.

Traditionally known as railway sleepers, the only thing in common is their shape and size. They are much lighter at around 35kg (can vary with weather conditions) and are much more eco friendly as reclaimed railway sleepers have creosote based treatment.

Our sleepers will either be green treated or brown treated depending on location. Within 3-6 months they will start fading to eventually be a silver-grey finish. The sleepers are pressure treated to help protect against rot and will last for 15 years+

  • Width & Depth may vary by up to 5% from the size shown
  • Sustainably resourced from managed forests

Designed for Garden Structures

These sleepers are constructed from new softwood timber that is pressure treated for outdoor use. The treatment helps them stand up to damp, decay and insect attack so your garden build lasts. They also offer straight, sawn edges—making it easier to install and stack without the irregularities of reclaimed sleepers.
You will note they come in standard lengths such as 2400 mm and widths around 200–240 mm. At around 56 000 g in weight per sleeper (for the largest size) they provide solid mass for raised beds, retaining walls or edging features.

Versatile Landscaping Use

Use these sleepers for a wide range of garden projects—from raised vegetable beds to long retaining walls or path edging. Their uniform shape and fresh cut faces suit both generous and compact spaces in your garden. The timber can be used untreated or coated if you want a different aesthetic, such as staining or oiling.

Treatment and Safety

The softwood is treated with a Tanalith E green preservative that is safe for gardens, including around children and pets, once the timber is installed. Unlike reclaimed sleepers treated with creosote, these new sleepers provide a safer, cleaner option for your exterior spaces.

Coverage and Handling

A typical sleeper size—2400 mm long by 240 mm wide by 120 mm thick—provides approximately 0.576 m² of face area when laid flat (2.4 m * 0.24 m). These sleepers are heavy—roughly 56 000 g in weight—so you’ll need two people to handle each for safe installation. Planning the layout helps reduce waste and makes your build smoother.

Maintenance and Lifespan

Over time the green treatment fades from green to honey brown and then to a silvery grey, giving an aged timber look without extra finishing. With correct installation and drainage, the sleepers can last well over 10-15 years in garden use. The straight edges and fresh faces make them easier to fix or repaint if you choose.
