Overview
Sadolin Wood Filler is specifically formulated for minor repairs and should not be applied at depths exceeding 5mm. Easy and fast to apply, it offers exceptional adhesion due to its nitro-cellulose resin composition.
For larger holes, consider using an alternative filler like Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler.
Preparation
Ensure timber surfaces are properly prepared, clean, stable, and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% before filling.
- Remove any existing paints, stains, or varnishes completely from the filling area.
- Remove decayed timber, cutting back 25mm into sound material, and repair as needed.
- Abrade smooth areas slightly to promote adhesion.
- For larger areas, consider splicing in new timber sections.
- After cutting back, treat the repair area (and any new timber) with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver or Sadolin Wood Preserver, allowing it to dry fully before filling with Sadolin Wood Filler.
- Timber treated with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver can be filled after 24 hours, while Sadolin Wood Preserver requires 72 hours drying time.
Note: Failure to provide a suitable substrate may lead to poor adhesion and performance. Following the manufacturer's recommendations and sanding the repaired area flush can yield excellent results.
Application
Before starting, conduct a small test area and strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container. Sadolin Wood Filler is ready for use upon delivery.
Conditions
Avoid application in rainy conditions or when air/substrate temperatures are below 8°C, or when relative humidity exceeds 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry to prevent adverse effects on curing, visual quality, and durability. The filler remains workable for up to 2 minutes at a temperature of 20°C.
Application
- Apply the wood filler using a plastic spatula, filling knife, or similar tool, leaving it slightly raised above the surface to allow for subsequent machining or sanding.
- Ensure thorough application to displace any air and achieve good contact between the filler and the timber.
- Avoid smearing the filler around the filling area to prevent affecting the timber's absorbency, which may lead to poor visual appearance when stained or varnished.
- Consider using masking tape to protect surrounding areas if feasible, removing it while the product is still workable.
- Sand the filler after approximately 30 minutes and coat after 2 hours.
- Carefully sand the filler flush to the timber surface using medium-grade abrasive paper.
- Remove any sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner.
Note: After storage, a small amount of liquid may form on the surface, which can be easily remixed into the material by stirring and does not affect performance.
Select a filler colour similar to the substrate (timber or stained timber) to achieve a seamless finish. Alternatively, opt for Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler and use it with your chosen wood stain or dye.
Cleaning equipment
Clean filling knives and other equipment with warm water before the product hardens.
Finishing
Sadolin Wood Filler is compatible with most interior and exterior timber coating systems. When over-coating with translucent products, the final appearance depends on various factors such as timber species, absorbency of timber and filler, and the presence of existing coatings.
If the filled timber is significantly darker than the filler, or if surrounding timber has been stained, apply a small amount of stain to the filled surface using an artist's brush to achieve a similar colour before coating the entire surface. More porous timbers may require 2 or 3 applications of stain to achieve the desired result.
Always conduct a test application, especially for accurate colour matching. Ensure the colour match between the substrate and filler is satisfactory in terms of colour, density, and workmanship before over-coating with clear or translucent finishing coats.
Aftercare
In exterior locations, maintain the decorative/protective finish as usual. If the timber is left unprotected, excessive movement may occur, potentially leading to a breakdown of the bond between the timber and filler.
