Overview
Sadolin Decking Oil is a premium, clear decking oil formulated for both hardwood and softwood decking. It nourishes the wood with natural oils and incorporates UV light absorbers, providing superior protection against harmful UV rays. Crafted from linseed oil and alkyd resin dissolved in de-aromatised white spirit.

Please note: This product replaces the Old Sadolin Decking Oil. The new formula is not fully compatible with the old product. It can be applied as a completely new coat but is not suitable for touching up previously coated decking oil.
Preparation
Ensure timber surfaces are properly prepared, clean, sturdy, and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% before coating.
For bare and new timber
- Lightly sand or scrub with a non-metallic stiff bristle brush, if necessary, to remove loose particles.
- Wash surfaces with water and a mild detergent, then allow to dry.
- Eliminate green algal growth with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner.
- For heavily weathered areas, sand back any grey denatured timber to a clean, sound surface.
- Remove resinous deposits with a scraper.
- Wipe exposed bare timber surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits, changing the cloth frequently.
- Ensure solvent fully evaporates before over-coating.
- Fill gaps or imperfections in decking boards with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler.
- Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin translucent woodcare systems.
- Treat freshly sawn ends of decking boards with a suitable preservative.
- Preservative-treated timber in ground contact (e.g., support posts) according to relevant standards.
- Rinse off surface salts left after preservative treatment with clean water and allow to dry.
- Utilise non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
For previously treated timber
Sadolin Decking Oil is suitable for use only on bare or previously oiled decking. It is not suitable for use over water-repellent preservative pre-treatments unless adequately weathered.
Previously painted or varnished surfaces must be sanded back to bare wood and treated as New Timber.
Application
Before starting your project, conduct a small test area to evaluate the colour, consistency, and compatibility of the finish. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Avoid application if there's a risk of rain, or when air or substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or if the relative humidity exceeds 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry, as failure to meet these conditions may affect the drying, visual quality, and durability of the finish.
Thoroughly stir the product before and during application. Sadolin Decking Oil comes ready for use and should not be thinned.
For optimal results
- Ensure the timber is dry before application.
- Coat decking boards on all sides before fixing.
- Allow 3 days after washing down or rainfall before applying.
- Apply liberally but evenly in the direction of the wood grain using a synthetic bristle brush or microfiber roller, ensuring complete saturation.
- Avoid over-brushing and prevent puddles from forming.
- Allow 16 hours to fully dry.
- Depending on timber absorbency, subsequent coats may be needed.
- We recommend 2 coats for bare decking and 1 coat for maintenance.
Cleaning equipment
Remove excess product from brushes before cleaning with a proprietary brush cleaner.
Aftercare
Maintenance
Due to the exposure of decks to high levels of weathering and abrasion, it's recommended to apply 1 or 2 coats of Sadolin Decking Oil annually as part of routine maintenance. Ensure the surface is properly cleaned before decorating. Areas with heavy foot traffic may require more frequent maintenance.
