Planed Softwood Timber 50x100mm (2 x 4 inch) with a finished size of 44x94mm is a smooth, easy-to-work-with timber option for interior joinery, shelving and framing. Supplied by Armstrong Cheshire, it combines a clean planed surface with reliable dimensions for a wide range of projects. What it is and how it’s finished
This timber is planed on all faces to produce a smooth, splinter-free surface. The nominal size is 50x100mm, but the finished size is 44x94mm. Planed timber is commonly sold as Planed Square Edge (PSE); where all faces are visible, Planed All Round (PAR) can be chosen, though PAR tends to be pricier. It’s typically used where appearance matters or a clean finish is required. The timber shown here is softwood, suitable for interior use and, with proper treatment, can be considered for external applications. Why choose our 50x100mm planed timber
- Smooth, splinter-free surface that finishes well with stains, oils or lacquers.
- Clean appearance makes it suitable for visible joinery, shelving and furniture frames.
- Versatile for a range of interior projects, from sash windows and shelving to light structural work.
- Competitive pricing achieved through bulk purchasing, with a broad stock of lengths. Available lengths
We stock a range of lengths from 0.9m up to 4.2m, ensuring you can pick pieces that fit your cut list without excessive waste. If you’re planning long runs, you’ll likely find suitable lengths in our stock. Ideal uses and practical notes
- Interiors: shelving, picture rails, window linings, decorative frames and light-duty joinery.
- Joining and framing: straightforward to cut, drill and fix with common fasteners.
- Finishing: accepts most finishes well; prepare the surface, apply stain or varnish evenly, and seal for durability.
- Exterior use: timber should be properly treated and sealed to resist weather exposure. Tips for action
Acclimatise timber in the work area before cutting, store flat off the ground in a dry place, and seal ends to reduce moisture movement. For best results, pre-drill to minimise splitting when nailing or screwing, and use compatible primers and finishes. Armstrong Cheshire provides a reliable, affordable option for planed softwood timber with consistent dimensions and a smooth finish, backed by stock that covers a wide range of project sizes.

FAQ
All of our C16 and C24 graded timber is regularised
Regularised timber is timber that has been processed to have a uniform shape and size. This means that the wood has been sawn and planed to remove any irregularities and ensure that each piece of wood has consistent dimensions. Regularised timber is often used in construction, particularly in the framing of buildings, as it is easier to work with and can be more efficiently installed than irregularly shaped timber.
We have one of the largest ranges of timber lengths, dimensions and grades available to buy online.
The variation you require will determine the exact lead time and delivery method.
Most orders arrive within 3-4 days, the maximum is 7 days. Please get in touch before you order if you need a specifc delivery date.
Delivery charges vary by postcode. To find out the delivery charge, add the item(s) you require to your basket and select CALCULATE SHIPPING at the bottom of the page.
Some orders are delivered on our own vehicles based in Leicestershire and Cheshire. We also use carriers including Yodel and Tuffnells. For some sizes and locations we use regional distributors.
If you'd prefer crane offloading rather than tail lift vehicle offloading for your brick order then this service is available for the majority of bricks that we sell. Charges are shown at checkout.
For deliveries of less than 6 packs then Taillift offloading is normally a more cost effective option
