Planed Softwood Timber 38x175mm (finished size 32x169mm) is a smooth, ready-to-work timber stock ideal for interior joinery, shelving and bespoke furniture. It’s designed for tradespeople and house builders who value consistent dimensions and a clean finish. This timber is sawn softwood that has been planed on the faces to remove rough surfaces. The nominal size is 38x175mm, with a finished size of 32x169mm after planing and rounding. Planed Square Edge (PSE) timber is planed on two faces and edges, while Planed All Round (PAR) is planed on all four faces; PAR generally carries a higher price due to the complete finish on every side. This product is softwood and most suited to interior use, though external application is possible if the timber is properly treated. Key features and advantages:
- Smooth, splinter-free surface ready for staining, oils or lacquers.
- Versatile for visible surfaces where appearance matters, such as shelving and feature pieces.
- Available in a range of lengths to suit different projects, from 0.9m up to 4.2m.
- Manufactured from softwood, offering workable timber for a variety of hobby and professional projects. Length options:
- Available lengths range from 0.9m to 4.2m, allowing you to minimise waste on longer runs or to fit shorter profiles exactly. Ideal uses and scenarios:
- Interiors: shelving, display pieces, decorative features, light furniture components.
- Joinery: window elements where a smooth face is beneficial, door frames, stair components.
- External projects: use only after applying appropriate treatment to protect against moisture and weathering.
- Flooring or show-piece surfaces: suitable where the timber will be visible and finish level is important. Practical tips:
- Treat external applications with a compatible wood preservative or finish to extend lifespan.
- If cutting to length, plane edges cleanly and seal cut ends to reduce moisture uptake.
- Test a small sample finish on an offcut to confirm stain or lacquer results before committing to the whole project. This Planed Softwood Timber provides a reliable, finish-ready option with consistent dimensions, helping tradespeople and builders deliver clean, professional results.

FAQ
All of our C16 and C24 graded timber is regularised
Regularised timber is timber that has been processed to have a uniform shape and size. This means that the wood has been sawn and planed to remove any irregularities and ensure that each piece of wood has consistent dimensions. Regularised timber is often used in construction, particularly in the framing of buildings, as it is easier to work with and can be more efficiently installed than irregularly shaped timber.
We have one of the largest ranges of timber lengths, dimensions and grades available to buy online.
The variation you require will determine the exact lead time and delivery method.
Most orders arrive within 3-4 days, the maximum is 7 days. Please get in touch before you order if you need a specifc delivery date.
Delivery charges vary by postcode. To find out the delivery charge, add the item(s) you require to your basket and select CALCULATE SHIPPING at the bottom of the page.
Some orders are delivered on our own vehicles based in Leicestershire and Cheshire. We also use carriers including Yodel and Tuffnells. For some sizes and locations we use regional distributors.
If you'd prefer crane offloading rather than tail lift vehicle offloading for your brick order then this service is available for the majority of bricks that we sell. Charges are shown at checkout.
For deliveries of less than 6 packs then Taillift offloading is normally a more cost effective option
