Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain

Overview

Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is ideal for a variety of outdoor wood projects, including windows, doors, and more. It serves as an excellent companion for wood surfaces previously treated with Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

Kindly note: This product is not suitable for use on floors or decking. For decking purposes, please refer to Sadolin Decking Oil or Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

Preparation

Timber surfaces need to be clean, dry, and structurally sound. The wood's moisture content should not exceed 18% before applying Sadolin Woodstain.

It's advisable to treat all bare wood, whether new or recently stripped, with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver before applying a base coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.

For old or previously treated timber

• Remove all previous coatings and finishes by sanding to reveal clean, sound, bare wood.
• Eliminate any surface dirt, debris, mould, algae, or fungi with an appropriate exterior wood cleaner.
• Use a scraper to remove any resinous deposits.
• Wipe exposed bare timber surfaces with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits to degrease them.
• Dense exotic hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti, and Balau should be degreased thoroughly with methylated spirits before applying Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain.
• Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin Woodstain systems.
• Use wood fillers designed for exterior timber to address minor surface defects, imperfections, and open joints.
• Only use non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.

For new timber

• Treat timber not pre-treated with wood preservative with two coats of clear Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, focusing on end grains.
• Allow 24 hours drying time between coats before applying one full coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.
• Ideally, apply wood preservative and base coat to all timber parts before fixing.
• For enhanced durability, consider using Sadolin Classic Wood Protection as a base coat, especially for hardwoods.

For previously stained timber

• Lightly sand in the direction of the grain to remove surface coatings without breaking through.
• Thoroughly sand areas with localised damage or deterioration due to extended exposure to factory coatings.
• Ensure new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates are finished with Extra Durable Woodstain before fixing.

For glazing

• Seal the backs of new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates with Extra Durable Woodstain.
• Use appropriate sealant for glazed joinery.
• Avoid using linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds with Sadolin wood protection systems.
• Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer of the glazing material.
• Apply silicone glazing materials only after finishing coats are complete.

Application

Before starting any project, it's essential to conduct a test area to ensure product suitability and the desired finish. Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions provided on the tin.

Avoid applying Sadolin Woodstain if there's a risk of rain, or if air or substrate temperatures fall below 8°C or exceed 25°C, or if the relative humidity surpasses 80% during application or drying periods. Protect the surface from frost and rain until it's completely dry. Failure to meet these conditions may compromise the drying, visual quality, and durability of the finish.

Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to avoid sheen and colour variations. Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain comes ready for use and should not be thinned.

• Apply the wood stain generously using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush
• Pay close attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills.
• Finish with two full coats of wood stain, ensuring a minimum drying time of 16-24 hours between coats.

Finishing

Once dry, the product can be over-coated with Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat for added durability.

Aftercare

Signs such as colour lightening, reduced sheen, or loss of water repellency indicate the need for maintenance. For routine upkeep, lightly sand in the direction of the wood grain and clean with warm water and mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly. Once dry, apply a fresh coat of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain.

If the finish is severely flaking or peeling, exposing bare wood or showing signs of greying, follow the complete Preparation and Application instructions as outlined above.

Frequently asked questions

Can Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain be used on decking?

Sadolin advises against using Extra Durable Woodstain on decking due to its high surface build and glossy finish. This product may wear out faster than dedicated decking stains or oils, potentially creating a slip hazard. Sadolin products are better suited for wooden joinery such as window frames, doors, and other vertical surfaces. However, Sadolin Classic Wood Protection, a wood stain and protector, is suitable for decking and is available in the same colour ranges as the 'Extra Durable' product line.

Is Sadolin Extra Durable Stain shiny or matte?

Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain dries to a satin/semi-gloss finish.

If I choose a colour in Classic, can I opt for a different colour in the Extra Durable line if I don't like it?

Certainly. As a translucent product, the colour may blend between the two shades but can be adjusted as you apply additional coats over time. It's generally easier to darken the colour than to lighten it due to contrast. We recommend conducting a test area to evaluate the final results.
