Sadolin Classic Wood Protection Stain

Overview

Sadolin Classic Wood Protection serves as a versatile wood stain suitable for both interior and exterior applications on smooth and rough-sawn timber. It functions well as a standalone stain or as a foundational coating for other products within the Sadolin range, such as Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain and Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.

Please note: While the design of the tin for this product is being updated, the formulation inside remains unchanged. Therefore, when ordering this product, you may receive either the old style tins, the new style tins, or a combination of both, particularly when ordering multiple tins.

Preparation

Timber surfaces must be adequately prepared, ensuring they are clean, sound, and dry. It's crucial that the moisture content does not exceed 18% before applying any coating.

For old or previously treated timber

• Remove all previous coatings and finishes by sanding to reveal clean, bare wood.
• Degrease any exposed bare timber surfaces using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits to eliminate surface impurities or resinous deposits.
• Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin woodstain systems.
• For hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti, and Balau, thorough degreasing with methylated spirits is necessary prior to applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection, as these woods contain natural oils.
• Minor surface defects, imperfections, or open joints can be filled with a suitable wood filler before coating.
• Only use non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.

For new timber

• If the timber has not been previously treated with a wood preservative, treat it with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver. Pay special attention to end grains and allow 24 hours drying time between coats before applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection.
• Ideally, apply the base coat to all surfaces of the wood before fixing in place.
• Note: When using this product on decking, it is suitable only for new decking or decking that has been completely stripped or sanded back to bare wood.

For previously stained timber

• Lightly abrade the surface, following the direction of the grain, to remove any remaining surface coating and sanding dust.
• In cases of localised damage or deterioration from prolonged exposure to the factory coating, thoroughly sand affected areas back to a sound substrate and re-coat as necessary.
• If a coloured base stain is needed to match the existing factory-applied coating, use Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in the appropriate colour before proceeding as described above.

For glazing

• Ensure the backs of new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates are finished using the full Sadolin system before fixing in place.
• Use a suitable sealant for glazing joinery coated with this product.
• Avoid using linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds with Sadolin Wood Protection systems.
• Confirm compatibility by consulting the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material.
• Silicone glazing materials should only be applied after completing the finishing coats.

Application

• Always conduct a test area before beginning any project to evaluate the product's suitability and final finish. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
• Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air or substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality, and durability of the finish.
• Ensure thorough stirring of Sadolin Woodstain before and during application to avoid sheen and colour variations. Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is ready to use from the tin and does not require thinning.
• For optimal results, use a high-quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush.
• Apply Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in a full flowing coat, working it well into joints and ensuring that end grains or sawn timbers are fully coated.
• After 5-10 minutes, redistribute the coating by brushing evenly in the direction of the grain.
• Avoid over-spreading Sadolin Classic, as this may reduce the long-term durability and performance of the coating.
• Sand between coats if there is any raised grain.

Finishing

Once dry, the product can be over-coated with Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat for added durability.

Normally, two coats are recommended for planed surfaces. However, for optimum durability and uniform appearance, we suggest using 1 coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection followed by 2 full coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain, Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat, Sadolin Outdoor Varnish, or Sadolin Yacht Varnish.

Aftercare and maintenance

If there is a lightening in colour, reduction in sheen, or loss of water-repellency, it indicates that maintenance is needed. For general upkeep, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry completely. Apply a fresh coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection if necessary.

If the finish is flaking or peeling to the extent where bare wood is exposed or has begun to grey, follow the full Preparation and Application instructions provided above.

Frequently asked questions

Can Sadolin Classic be used on decking?

Yes, this product is suitable for use on decking, provided that the wood is bare. Three coats will be required for optimal results.

I have left this product in storage for over 6 months and the solvents have risen to the top, resulting in a very thin consistency. Is it safe to use?

Simon from Sadolin recommends not just stirring, but "folding" the product with an inch thick bladed knife to redistribute the solvents. This should restore the normal consistency. Test the product on the surface with a brush after.

Can this be used on a wooden kitchen floor?

Yes, this product can be applied to interior wooden floors. However, it must be finished with a Sadolin varnish suitable for flooring, such as the Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish.

If I decide on a colour in Classic, can I choose a different colour in the Extra Durable if I do not like it?

Absolutely. As a translucent product, the resulting colour may be a combination of the two shades but can be adjusted as you apply more coats over time. It is easier to darken the colour than to lighten it due to contrast. We recommend conducting a test area to assess the final results.
